Introduction

The Department of Applied Foreign Languages was established in 2005. Starting from 2008, this department collaborated with New Taipei Municipal Sanzhi Elementary School to hold the English Teaching Practice course for our 4th-year students. Furthermore, two course modules were established in 2009 and modified to the present ones: Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) to Children and Tourism. The Internship Program commenced in 2015.

Curriculum Design

We strive to provide the best support for our students to become applied language professionals, in response to global economic developments in our times and persistent local demands of such human resources. The characteristics of our program include: establishing practical courses, setting up English graduation threshold, promoting specialized certification, enriching competition experience, and cultivating event organization skills.

To provide a rigorous five-year training for intermediate applied English professionals, the department has set the following goals for students in planning the required and elective courses:

•Providing a solid foundation for English skills: We offer a series of English training courses for students to master the four fundamental English skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

•Nurturing diverse skills for the job market: To enhance students’ competitiveness in today’s career market, we offer two course modules—Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) to Children and Tourism—in order to help students explore their strengths and career interests.

•Sculpting sound character: We assign a mentor to each class, providing students with open access to advice and support whenever needed. It is also through the mentor system that the department puts character education into practice, emphasizing interpersonal respect and open-mindedness.
